Studio Storey is an online index of selected work by Matthew Mead, mostly making and writing.

For me, the collision between making things and telling tales begins with my grandfather, Maurice Storey. When I was about eight years old, my grandfather made me a toolbox and gave it to me, along with a few tools. He taught me how to hold a saw, repoint the brickwork, prune an apple tree. For much of my 20s and 30s, I studied and worked as an academic in the field of Critical Theory. But some of my grandfather’s lessons from the garage and the garden seem to have stuck.

These days, when I write, it’s mostly about objects; and the best objects I make, I hope, have a narrative dimension. Storeys and stories — they share a root — each piled up, one on top of another.
